Hideto Takami
(Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology, Japan)

Dr. Takami received his Ph.D. in 1993 from the Department of Bioengineering at Tokyo Institute of Technology. After a post-doctoral fellowship at Center for Microbial Ecology of Michigan State University, he joined the research project of deep-sea microorganisms at Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) in 1995. Dr. Hideto Takami is a currently senior research scientist and team leader of the Environmental Metagenomic Research team at JAMSTEC. Also, he is a visiting professor of the School of Veterinary Medicine at Azabu University. Dr. Takami is one of pioneers in Japanese microbial genomics and he is one of trustees of Society of Genome Microbiology, Japan. He is also associate editor of gMicrobes and Environmentsh issued by The Japanese Society of Microbial Ecology.

He launched the genome sequencing project of extremophilic bacilli in 1998 at JAMSTEC, aimed at elucidation of the adaptation mechanisms of the microbes under extreme environments. He completed the sequencing projects of 3 bacilli possessing extremophilic properties such as alkaliphilic, halophilic, and thermophilic for 6 years to 2004. He proceeded to the new project of metagenomic analysis of the microbial community in the deep subsurface and deep-sea environments because he is interested in the microbial diversity and the genetic function of a whole microbial community in the extreme environments, which is mostly composed of uncultivable microbes.

Dr. Takami has received several awards in 2001 such as The Commendation for Science and Technology by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (Prizes of Science and Technology), and The Academic Research Award from The Toyama Prefectural Foundation.
